How Many Shots of Vodka to Get Drunk?

Updated July 2026.

A 1.5-ounce shot of 80-proof (40% ABV) vodka is one US standard drink — 14 grams, or 0.6 fluid ounces, of ethanol (NIAAA, December 2025). That is the conversion this URL can give. How many of those shots it takes to feel drunk is not a number. Weight, food, time, and tolerance change blood alcohol. Competitors that print “drunk at 3–4 shots” are writing a challenge. This page is math.

Four standard drinks in about two hours is already NIAAA’s binge-drinking pattern for women; five is the male pattern. That is a public-health warning, not a target and not a “safe” recipe. Do not use this page to drink to a count.

Vodka shot conversions

Standard drinks = (fl oz × ABV) ÷ 0.6. US shot = 1.5 fl oz ≈ 44 mL. Unflavored vodka bottled as “vodka” must be at least 40% ABV (27 CFR 5.142). Flavored vodka is a different class and may be bottled as low as 30% (27 CFR 5.151).

Vodka on the label ABV Std drinks / 1.5 oz shot Volume shots in 750 mL Std drinks in that 750 mL
Standard US vodka (5.142 floor) 40% (80 proof) 1.00 ~16.9 ~16.9
Flavored vodka example 35% (70 proof) 0.88 ~16.9 ~14.8
Pink Whitney (flavored, 5.151 floor) 30% (60 proof) 0.75 ~16.9 ~12.7
Bottled-in-bond / 100 proof 50% 1.25 ~16.9 ~21.1
Overproof worked example 60% 1.50 ~16.9 ~25.4
50 mL mini, 40% 40% ~1.13

A 750 mL fifth is about 16.9 full 1.5-ounce jiggers plus a splash, or about 17 if pours run light — see shots in a 750ml bottle. A handle (1.75 L) of 80-proof vodka is about 39.5 volume shots and about 39.5 standard drinks. That is inventory, not a weekend plan. For the 30% flavored worked example, see Pink Whitney math.

Why “three to five shots” is not an answer

SERP pages lead with Widmark tables: 120 lb = 2 shots, 200 lb man = 4–5, “most adults 3–4 in an hour.” Those charts treat 0.08% BAC as a finish line. They are not a bottle size, not a roadside test, and not something this page will reprint as a recipe. BAC depends on grams of alcohol, body water, and time. A 120-pound person and a 220-pound person do not match. Food in the stomach slows absorption. Carbonated mixers can speed it. Four shots in ten minutes is not four shots over a long dinner.

Legal driving is 0.08% BAC in most US states (0.05% in Utah). Impairment starts before you feel “drunk.” Feeling fine is not a roadside test. If you have to ask how many shots until you are drunk, you already need a ride home that is not you.

What the old page got messy

Vodka is not “the fastest way to get drunk” as a chemical superpower. Ethanol is ethanol. A shot of 40% vodka matches a 12-ounce 5% beer and a 5-ounce 12% wine in alcohol (NIAAA poster, December 2025). What is fast is drinking neat spirits without the volume of beer. Mood is not a reliable tolerance switch. Rectified spirits near 96% ABV are not vodka for shots; they are a different class. Do not treat them as a well pour.

TTB’s vodka standard of identity (27 CFR 5.142) is a neutral spirit bottled at not less than 40% ABV. Adding flavoring materials moves the bottle to flavored vodka or a specialty, and flavored spirits must still be at least 30% (5.151) if they keep that class. Read the neck. Mini 50 mL airplane bottles are 1.7 ounces — about 1.1 drinks at 80 proof, not “a small one.”

If you are going to drink vodka anyway

  • Count standard drinks, not glasses. A pint-glass vodka soda can hold two shots (2 oz at 40% = 1.33 drinks).
  • Eat. Water. Time.
  • Do not stack shots with beer and then forget the beer. See how many beers equal a shot.
  • Medications plus alcohol is a clinician question.
  • Stop well before a binge-drinking count if the goal is not to be sick.

For a lower-proof rum liqueur comparison, see Malibu. For the physical pour, see how many mL is a shot. Proof on the label is explained at what is vodka proof.

Mixers, beer back, and the pint glass problem

A vodka soda in a pint glass is often 2 ounces of vodka, which is 1.33 standard drinks at 80 proof, not one. Two of those plus a beer is more than three drinks. A “vodka energy drink” does not cancel ethanol; caffeine can mask tiredness. Count the vodka ounces, then add anything else alcoholic. The chaser is not a deduction.

Freezer vodka is thicker and easier to over-pour because it looks slow. Use a jigger anyway. A 10-pack of 50 mL minis is about 11.3 standard drinks at 80 proof — a fifth’s worth of bad decisions if you treat them as candy. For flavored 30% vodka, Pink Whitney is the worked example.
