Does Vodka Freeze?

Standard 80-proof vodka will not freeze solid in a normal home freezer. US vodka is bottled at not less than 40% ABV (27 CFR 5.142). A typical freezer is about 0°F (−18°C). Ethanol–water tables put 40% alcohol near −16°F (−27°C). The bottle gets viscous and ice-cold. It does not turn into a cube.

That freeze point is a mixture table, not a Grey Goose lab sheet. Flavored vodka can be bottled as low as 30% ABV (60 proof) in the US. That sits closer to what a very cold freezer can slush. Read the proof. Champagne at ~12% will freeze in the same box — see does champagne freeze.

Pure ethanol freezes near −114°C (−173°F). Water freezes at 0°C. Vodka is a mix, so the freezing point sits between them. A 0°F freezer is cold enough to thicken 80-proof and mute aroma. It is not a laboratory chest freezer.

Should you store vodka in the freezer?

You can. Many bars do. Cold vodka feels smoother because volatiles are quieter — that hides cheap heat and also hides good character. It is a serving choice, not preservation. Distilled 40% vodka does not spoil in the cabinet; see the same logic on gin. Do not freeze vodka to “keep it safe.”

If a bottle in the freezer is slushy, you are looking at a lower-proof or sugary SKU, a freezer set well below 0°F, or both. Juice-heavy popsicles with a splash of vodka stay slushy because the ethanol wrecks a clean ice crystal. You can still get drunk on cold vodka. Temperature does not delete the 14 grams of alcohol in a 1.5-ounce 80-proof shot (NIAAA).
