A 1.5-ounce shot of 40% rum is one US standard drink — 14 grams, or 0.6 fluid ounces, of ethanol (NIAAA, December 2025). Spiced rum at 35% and coconut rum at 21% are not that shot. How many pours it takes to feel drunk is not a pirate count. Competitors that print “drunk at 3–4 shots” are writing a challenge. This page is math.
Four standard drinks in about two hours is NIAAA’s binge-drinking pattern for women; five is the male pattern. That is a warning, not a tiki recipe. Eight / ten drinks is high-intensity drinking. Volume shots and alcohol shots only match at 40% ABV.
Rum is not one strength
Standard drinks = (fl oz × ABV) ÷ 0.6. US shot = 1.5 fl oz ≈ 44 mL. TTB’s rum standard of identity bottles rum at not less than 40% ABV (27 CFR 5.147). Flavored rum and rum liqueurs are separate, weaker products. White and gold cocktail rums sold as “rum” in the US are usually 40%. Overproof and navy-style rums are not.

Jamaica’s rum GI is often summarized at a 37.5% bottling floor. That conflicts with some “most commercial Jamaican expressions ≥40%” write-ups, and this run did not fetch the JIPO specification sheet. Conservative line: a bottle sold as “rum” in the US still has to meet 27 CFR 5.147 (≥40%) unless it is labeled as flavored rum or a liqueur. Do not treat a Jamaican neck as 37.5% unless the label says so.
Daiquiris hide the rum
A classic daiquiri is often 2 ounces of 40% rum — 1.33 drinks before the lime, or 2.00 if the pour is a full 3 ounces. A frozen “rum runner” or a pint-glass Dark ’n’ Stormy can hide two or three. Punch bowls that start with “a fifth of rum” dump about 16.9 drinks of 80-proof rum into the mix, plus whatever wine or liqueur followed. Ice is not a discount.
Overproof rum in a flaming shot is still ethanol. A 1.5-ounce pour of 63% is about 1.58 standard drinks. Two of those are three drinks. Competitors name leftover 151-proof bottles and specific Jamaican overproof SKUs as if they were the well. Those are not current US inventory on this page. Same proof, same grams — rum is not automatically milder than whiskey because of beaches.
Binge lines and the handle
Legal driving is 0.08% BAC in most US states (0.05% in Utah). Commercial drivers sit under 0.04%. A 1.75 L handle of 40% rum is about 39.5 drinks — inventory. Do not use this page to drink to a number. Eat. Water. Time. Count the beer in the other hand. Stop well before a binge-drinking count if the goal is not to be sick.
