A 12-ounce can of original Truly Hard Seltzer at 5% ABV is one US standard drink — 14 grams of alcohol, same as a 12-ounce 5% beer. Official Lime tile this fetch: 5% ABV. Truly Unruly is 8% ABV — 1.60 drinks in a 12-ounce can. Four original cans in two hours is already NIAAA’s binge-drinking pattern for women; five is the male pattern. That is a warning, not a target.
Truly is Boston Beer’s seltzer. It is not a lighter form of alcohol than White Claw or Bud Light at the same ABV. Lemonade, punch, Unruly, vodka seltzer, and tea lines are not automatically 5%. Read the can.
Truly conversions
Standard drinks = (fl oz × ABV) ÷ 0.6. One US drink = 14 g / 0.6 fl oz alcohol (NIAAA, December 2025).

It does not sneak up because it is “not beer”
The old page said carbonation makes Truly hit in ten minutes and that two cans can get you “very drunk quickly.” Flight Wine Bar, TrueBeer, Draft Mag, and Alcomato lead with “drunk at 3–5 / 4–6” plus weight charts. That is a challenge. Carbonation can speed absorption for some people. It does not rewrite the gram count. A 5% seltzer is not faster than a 5% lager as a chemical law. What is fast is drinking sweet cans like soda.
Hangovers come from ethanol, dehydration, and how much you drank. Truly is not a hangover-free loophole compared with wine or beer. If you drink six original cans, you drank six standard drinks (or more, if they were Unruly). For beer-can math, see how many beers.
Weight charts are not a lab test
The 2022 URL ranked cans by body weight (100 lb = two to three cans, 180 lb = four to six). Those tables copy a classroom BAC card, ignore food and time, and treat every can as 5%. We are not reprinting them. Body weight, sex, medications, and pace change BAC. Legal driving is 0.08% in most US states (0.05% in Utah). Impairment starts before you feel drunk. Two Trulys is not a “safe to drive” certificate.
Women, on average, reach a higher BAC than men at the same dose. That is population physiology, not a scoreboard. Older adults often have less body water. None of that is a recipe.
If you are going to drink Truly anyway
- Count ABV × ounces, not flavors in the variety pack.
- Do not treat Unruly or a leftover Extra as “one seltzer.”
- Eat. Water. Time. Do not stack seltzers with shots and forget the shots.
- Stop well before a 4- or 5-drink-in-two-hours pattern if the goal is not to be sick.

Variety packs hide the 8% cans
A mixed 12-pack is not twelve identical drinks if Unruly snuck in. Flip every can. Boston Beer has used 5% and 8% in the same brand family for years. Official Unruly copy this fetch is 8% ABV; the mix-pack tile does not print ounces. US retailer 12-packs are 12-ounce slim cans. A 16- or 24-ounce Unruly, if you see one, is more drinks — use the formula. Vodka seltzer and tequila soda lines, where sold, are a different alcohol source at whatever ABV the can prints. Do not invent that they are 5%.
Truly is not vodka. It is a flavored seltzer with fermented alcohol. A vodka soda you build with a 1.5-ounce 80-proof pour is one standard drink plus mixer. A 12-ounce 5% Truly is one drink with the mixer already in the can. Do not “match” them one-for-one with a 2-ounce well vodka soda and assume they are equal. See vodka shots.
