Can You Freeze Whiskey?

Typical 40% ABV whiskey will not freeze solid in a home freezer (~0°F / −18°C, FoodSafety.gov). Ethanol and water freeze far apart; the mixture sits well below that box. A University of Illinois ethanol–water volume table puts 40% near −10°F / −23°C — a binary-mixture table, not a whiskey lab sheet. The freezer does not “spoil” a sealed bottle. Cold mutes aroma. That is quality, not safety. No flaming-shot method.

Proof vs a home freezer

US whisky as a class is bottled ≥40% ABV (27 CFR 5.143). A 1.5 oz pour at 40% is one NIAAA standard drink. FoodSafety.gov: set a home freezer to 0°F (−18°C) or below — that is a food-appliance line, not a spirits spec. Pure ethanol’s fusion point on NIST WebBook sits near 159 K (−114°C). Water freezes at 0°C. The drink is a mix, so the freezing point sits between those poles and well under a kitchen freezer.

The 2022 URL locked whiskey at −27°C / −16°F and promised a “slushy” bottle after a few days. That −16°F figure is not the 40% by volume line on the university table we fetched. Unused as a whiskey SKU freeze point. We will not invent a more precise °F for Jack, Basil Hayden, or a named Scotch. Flavored or cream SKUs can sit closer to a cold freezer because sugar and lower ABV change the mix. Read the neck.

Quality vs safety

A sealed 40% whiskey in the freezer does not become leftover food. USDA/FSIS 2-hour leftover rules are perishable cooked food. The freezer does not “spoil” the spirit and it does not pasteurize it. What you lose is aroma: cold suppresses volatiles, so the pour tastes flatter until it warms. That is a serving choice. It is not a safety step and it is not barrel aging in reverse.

Cans of beer and bottles of wine can freeze and burst in the same box. Typical 40% whiskey will not. A sugary ready-to-drink can is not this FAQ. Sister can tequila freeze (3611) is still the old URL — not rewritten this batch, not linked.

Do not use this page as a flaming-shot or freezer-challenge guide. Flash point is a different chemistry problem (see the vodka-flammable on that leftover). Temperature does not delete the 14 g of alcohol in a 1.5 oz 40% pour.

Whiskey stones and a single cube are serving tools, not freeze-point experiments. Dilution from ice is a taste choice. A frozen glass can thermal-shock thin crystal; that is glassware, not chemistry we will specify. If you want the nose, let the pour warm in the glass. If you want it colder, the freezer will oblige without turning 40% into a cube.

27 CFR 5.143 still applies in the freezer: whisky as a class is bottled ≥40% ABV. Bourbon, rye, Scotch, and Irish whiskey are types under that section — not one liquid. A 40% Scotch and a 40% bourbon sit on the same freeze table as ethanol–water. A barrel-proof rye at 60%+ sits colder still. We will not invent a °F for each SKU. Read the neck, then treat 0°F as “cold drink,” not “solid.”
