A 53-gallon American Standard Barrel holds about 267 bottles of 750 mL — if nothing evaporates. 53 US gallons is 6,784 fluid ounces. A 750 mL bottle is 25.36 fl oz. 6,784 ÷ 25.36 ≈ 267. Aging takes a large cut of that. The “angel’s share” is evaporation, not a TTB yield guarantee. We will not print “220 bottles every time.”
The 53-gallon barrel is cooperage custom, not a federal fill. TTB considered defining an oak barrel as about 50 gallons and dropped it (Notice No. 176 era). See how many gallons in a barrel of whiskey.

Entry proof for bourbon is at or below 125 (27 CFR 5.143). Dump proof is lower after aging. A barrel that went in at 125 and comes out at 110 still had volume loss; the proof can go up or down with water vs ethanol leaving the wood. Bottle count is liters remaining ÷ 0.75, not a marketing slogan.
A 750 mL bottle at 40% is about 17 US 1.5-ounce shotsshots in a 750ml. 267 theoretical bottles × 17 shots is a fantasy barrel. After the angel’s share you do not have 267 bottles.
Scotch often uses ex-bourbon barrels rebuilt as hogsheads. That is why a “barrel of whiskey” in Scotland is not always 53 gallons. Beer keg math is a different page: ounces in a keg.
