Madeira vs Marsala: What’s the Difference?

Updated July 2026

Madeira and Marsala are different fortified-wine appellations, not twins. Madeira is a Portuguese DO (IVBAM). That statute sets acquired alcohol typically 17–22% (exception 15.5% needs authorization). Marsala is a Sicilian DOC. Fine sits at a 17.5% minimum; other styles 18%. US dessert-wine alcohol band is a US type.21 — still two bottles. Cooking “swap” is kitchen talk, not a legal type.
