Updated June 2026.
Malibu Original is bottled at 21% ABV (42 proof) — official US product FAQ, malibudrinks.com. A US 1.5-ounce shot of it holds about 0.53 standard drinks. Two measured shots are about one shot of 80-proof vodka. One US standard drink of Original is about 2.9 ounces (0.6 ÷ 0.21), not a 1.5-ounce jigger.
A 750 mL bottle holds about 17 volume shots and about 8.9 standard drinks. A 1.75 L handle is about 20.7 standard drinks. None of that tells you “how many until you are drunk.” Weight, food, time, and tolerance decide impairment. Treat the table as label math. It is not a safe-intoxication plan and not a drinking challenge.
Malibu is a coconut-flavored rum liqueur (white rum with coconut liqueur), not a 40% Caribbean rum. The sugar and low proof are why it drinks easy and why people lose the count. Competitor “4–6 shots gets most adults drunk” tables are guesses. This page will not print one.
Malibu shot math (1.5 fl oz US pour)
Standard drinks = (ounces × ABV) ÷ 0.6. One US standard drink = 14 grams of alcohol (NIAAA, updated December 2025 / CDC). NIAAA’s own liqueur example is 2–3 fl oz of a ~24% cordial as one drink. Original at 21% needs a slightly larger pour to hit that same 0.6 fl oz of ethanol.
| What you poured (read the label) | ABV | Volume | Std drinks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Malibu Original, 1.5 oz shot | 21% | 1.5 fl oz | 0.53 |
| Malibu Original, one standard drink | 21% | ~2.9 fl oz | 1.00 |
| 80-proof vodka shot (comparison) | 40% | 1.5 fl oz | 1.00 |
| Pink Whitney shot (comparison) | 30% | 1.5 fl oz | 0.75 |
| 750 mL fifth of Original | 21% | 25.4 fl oz | ~8.9 |
| 1.75 L handle of Original | 21% | 59.2 fl oz | ~20.7 |
Pernod Ricard / The Absolut Company lists Malibu Original at 21% ABV on the US product page (“What ABV is Malibu Original? Malibu Original is 21% ABV.”). The site footer still prints a 21%–24% Alc./Vol. band for the trademark line. That band is not a second Original number. If the front label is not 21%, use the ABV that is printed.
Malibu Black and the fruit flavors are different SKUs. The official Original page describes Black as the same coconut flavor and does not print an ABV on that FAQ. Do not apply the 0.53-drink row to a darker cap until you read the neck.
What “three shots will get you drunk” gets wrong
Three 1.5-ounce shots of Original Malibu are about 1.6 standard drinks. That can make a small person who drank on an empty stomach feel it. It will not match three shots of 80-proof rum. Older copy on this URL treated 3 shots, 5 shots, and 8 shots as flavor-by-flavor drunk lines and even called eight shots in an hour “safe.” That is the opposite of responsible math. NIAAA’s binge-drinking pattern is 4 drinks (women) or 5 (men) in about two hours. Eight half-drinks of Malibu in an hour is still a binge-level dose for many people, and “safe” is not a word this page will attach to a shot count.
Weight-by-shot BAC charts on competitor pages (100 lb = 4–6 shots, and so on) are Widmark sketches, not lab results. We will not reprint one. Legal driving limit is 0.08% BAC in most of the US (0.05% in Utah). Feeling “fine” is not a test.
Mixers hide the tally
A Malibu and pineapple in a pint glass is often 2–3 ounces of liqueur, not one shot — closer to one full standard drink before the juice. Two of those and a beer is not “just Malibu.” Count the ounces you poured. A 750 mL bottle split into tropical punches is still about nine standard drinks of alcohol plus whatever else went in the pitcher. For bottle yield, see how many shots are in a 750ml bottle. For a 40% baseline, see vodka shot math. For 30% lemonade vodka, see Pink Whitney.
Factors that change how those drinks feel
- Body weight and sex. Same grams of alcohol, different BAC.
- Food. Fat and protein slow absorption; empty stomach raises the peak.
- Time. Four drinks in 15 minutes is not four drinks over four hours.
- Other alcohol. Beer before rum liqueur still counts.
- Medications and health. If you have to ask the internet whether you can drink on a drug, ask a clinician, not a FAQ.
Do not use shot math to decide you can drive.
A fifth of Malibu is not a fifth of rum
People buy a 750 mL Malibu for a beach cooler and treat it like a handle of white rum. It is not. Nine standard drinks in the bottle is a lot of coconut, not a lot of 40% rum. If you “cut” it with 80-proof rum in a pitcher, every ounce of the 80-proof is a full extra third of a standard drink per half-shot. Write the recipe in ounces. A solo cup with 4 ounces of Original Malibu is about 1.4 standard drinks before the pineapple juice. Two cups is a binge-pattern dose for many women under the NIAAA 4-drink-in-two-hours line — still not a target.
Official Original contains no coconut milk, coconut cream, or dairy. The brand also says it cannot call the product vegan because of a sugar-refining step. Neither fact changes the ethanol.
