Updated June 2026.
Michigan’s default is no alcoholic liquor sold from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. any day — beer included (MCL 436.2114(1)). Sunday 7:00 a.m.–noon needs a Sunday Sales Permit (A.M.) ($160) and a local that did not ban it. Without the permit, Sunday beer starts at noon. Christmas blackout: 11:59 p.m. Dec. 24 to noon Dec. 25. New Year’s 4:00 a.m. is on-sale only. Age 21.
Michigan is a wholesale control state for spirits. Groceries with an SDM license sell beer and wine; an SDD sells spirits. The 2:00 a.m.–7:00 a.m. blackout still applies. Locals’ statutory hook in § 2114 is Sunday (via 1111/1113), not a general Tuesday 10:00 p.m. beer ban. Confirm the store’s permit. Neighbor: Ohio and Indiana.
Beer clock
| When | Default | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Saturday | Sale allowed 7:00 a.m.–2:00 a.m. | Store house hours can be shorter. Time includes daylight saving (§ 2114(3)) |
| Sunday before noon | Needs Sunday Sales Permit (A.M.) + local must not have banned it | Many stores wait until noon. MLCC publishes the opt-out list — we will not reprint it |
| Sunday noon–2:00 a.m. Monday | Allowed unless the local Sunday ban applies | Spirits also need Sunday Sales Permit (P.M.) after noon |
| 2:00 a.m.–7:00 a.m. any day | No sale | MCL 436.2114(1) |
| Christmas Eve / morning | No sale 11:59 p.m. Dec. 24 to noon Dec. 25 | MCL 436.2113(5) — beer, wine, and spirits, on- and off-premise |
| New Year’s Eve | Package still stops at 2:00 a.m. | On-premise may run to 4:00 a.m. Jan. 1 (R 436.1403(7)). Not a grocery loophole |
A 12-ounce 5% beer is one standard drink; light beer is less ethanol, not zero. Hours are not a drinking target. See how many beers to get drunk and gas stations.
