Best Bourbon for a Paper Plane

Updated July 2026.

The IBA Paper Plane is 30 ml bourbon, 30 ml Amaro Nonino, 30 ml Aperol, and 30 ml fresh lemon — equal parts, shaken. The 30 ml of 40% bourbon is 0.67 of a standard drink. Aperol is commonly 11% and Nonino Quintessentia about 35% — read those necks — so the glass is more than “one shot of whiskey.” This is not a 2022 top-8 tasting.

90–100 proof bourbon keeps the drink from collapsing into orange bitters. Related: Old Fashioned, IBA math.

What the shaker actually needs

Job Typical bottles Why
IBA 30 ml bourbon Buffalo Trace 90, Woodford 90.4, Elijah Craig Small Batch, WT 101 Equal-parts drink; proof still shows
Budget Evan Williams Bonded, Beam Bonded 100 proof. Cheap bourbon
Do not swap freely Random amaro / Aperol substitutes IBA names Nonino and Aperol

Four IBA Paper Planes are about 2.7 drinks from the bourbon alone, plus the liqueurs. NIAAA binge pattern is a health line, not a target. No 2026 MSRP.
