Plenty of real bourbon still sells under $50 at ordinary US liquor retail when the bottle is in stock. This is not a 2026 price list. Shelf tags move by state, tax, and allocation. We are not inventing an MSRP. If the sticker is $51, it is not “under $50” that day.
Bourbon identity does not change with the price: at least 51% corn, distilled at or below 160 proof, entered into new charred oak at or below 125 proof, bottled at 40% ABV or more (27 CFR 5.143). “Best” here means widely distributed bottles that actually show up under $50, not a tasting we did not run this year.

How to shop the shelf, not a list
Look at proof, age statement, and fill. A $28 bonded 100-proof bottle is more whiskey than a $42 80-proof bottle if you are mixing. Age statements under $50 still exist (Elijah Craig Small Batch is 12 years on current US labels when the brand prints it; confirm the neck). NAS is not a defect. It is a missing number.
Skip the “19 best of 2022” ranking energy. Bottles get reformulated, age statements drop, and a store in Texas is not a store in New York. Kirkland bourbon at Costco is a different private-label questionKirkland vodka is the method (read the back label), not this page.
For pour math, a 1.5-ounce 80-proof pour is one US standard drink (NIAAA). 100 proof is 1.25 drinks in the same jigger. Calories scale with ethanolbourbon calories. For a substitute ladder off Beam, Jim Beam substitute.
