There is no official “best rye for a Sazerac.” The IBA recipe prints 50 ml cognac, 10 ml absinthe, sugar, and Peychaud’s, and notes rye later substituted for cognac. US rye is still ≥51% rye, bottled at 80 proof or more. A 1.5-ounce pour at 40% is one NIAAA drink; 50 ml at 40% is about 1.13. 100 proof is not bottled-in-bond.

Spec vs class
| Language | Drinks |
|---|---|
| IBA Sazerac | ~1.13 at 40% / 50 ml |
| Rye substitution | Scale that rye |
| US rye | 1.00 per 1.5 oz at 40% |
| 100-proof rye | 1.25 per 1.5 oz |
A 750 mL 40% rye is about 17 drinks. Four 1.5-ounce pours are four drinks. Pour math: whiskey drinks.
