Unopened Hennessy does not spoil like wine or mix. US bottles of Hennessy V.S, V.S.O.P, and X.O are typically 40% ABV cognac. At that strength ordinary microbes do not live in the bottle. TTB does not require an expiration date on distilled spirits. A sealed bottle stored upright, cool, and dark can sit for years and still be cognac.
Opened bottles oxidize. Fruit and oak flatten. That is quality, not a USDA leftover. Month clocks on the 2022 page were folklore. Hennessy and TTB do not publish “six months after you crack the foil.” Use your nose. Do not freeze it to “keep it fresh” — see does Hennessy freeze.

Cognac vs the new RTDs
Hennessy is cognac — French brandy from the Cognac AOC, a grape distillate aged in oak. It is not whiskey. For the grape-vs-grain contrast see Crown Royal vs Hennessy. Core US V.S is widely sold at 40% ABV; confirm the label. Limited editions can differ.
In June 2026 Hennessy launched US ready-to-serve “Very Special Cocktails” (Henny-Rita 18% ABV, Henny Berry 20%, Henny Iced Tea 18%) in 375 mL bottles. Those are flavored, lower-proof mixed drinks, not V.S in the decanter. They follow a different chemistry and a printed date if the label has one. This page is about the cognac.
Storage
- Upright, tight cap, out of sun. Spirit eats cork if you store it on its side.
- Room temperature. The fridge is a serving choice.
- Travel minis in a hot car are a flavor problem first.
