Math: 750 mL × 0.40 = 300 mL ethanol. One standard drink is 0.6 fl oz ≈ 17.7 mL ethanol, so 300 ÷ 17.7 ≈ 16.9 drinks. Same count as any 40% spirit in a 750 mL bottle. See what a fifth is.
Proof vs the name on the bottle
US proof is twice ABV, so 80 proof = 40%. That is TTB labeling, not a tasting note. V.S is not “weaker” than X.O because it is younger. Both core US bottles are 40% on the VA ABC tiles this fetch. Official us.hennessy.com V.S product copy this fetch did not print ABV — the ABC tile and the official 70 cl / 75 cl titles that include 40% are the locks. Confirm the neck in your hand.
Limited editions can deviate. A Master Blender’s Selection page title has printed a non-40% strength; 46% unused unless an official tile is in front of you. Read the bottle. Ready-to-drink Hennessy cocktails, if you see them, are not 40%.

Mixed drinks and free-pours
Hennessy and cola, apple juice, or a “Henny” cocktail only add ethanol if the mixer is alcoholic. Cola is 0%. A 2-ounce free-pour of V.S is 1.33 standard drinks before ice melt. Dilution changes the taste, not the grams already poured. For mixers, good chasers for Hennessy.
V.S must be aged at least two years; V.S.O.P four; X.O ten under current Cognac AOC aging bands. Those bands are age, not proof. A tasting-room ½-ounce flight of X.O is 0.33 of a standard drink at 40% ABV, the same as ½ ounce of V.S.
Cognac is brandy, not a 50% myth
The old page treated Hennessy as uniquely strong. Core US V.S is 40%, the same as well vodka. A V.S.O.P night feels different because of congeners, price, and the mixer — not because X.O sneaks extra proof into the same 1.5 ounces.
