Best Bitters for a Manhattan

Updated April 2026.

The IBA Manhattan already names the bitters: one dash of Angostura. The rest of the card is 50 ml rye whiskey and 20 ml sweet red vermouth, stirred, cherry garnish. Peychaud’s, orange bitters, or a split-dash house build are legal drinks — they are not the IBA Manhattan. A dash is a milliliter-scale dose (bar tests vary; not TTB). The ethanol that matters is the rye and vermouth. This is not a 2023 ranking of 15 bottles.

Sweet vs dry vermouth changes the drink more than swapping aromatic bitters. Related: whiskey for a Manhattan, bourbon Manhattan, sweet vs dry vermouth, how much is a dash.

What the card actually uses

Bottle Role
Angostura aromatic IBA dash. The named bitter
Peychaud’s Sazerac / house Manhattan — not the IBA card
Orange bitters Optional house split; not IBA
Rye 50 ml (IBA) ~1.13 drinks at 40%; more at 50%
Sweet vermouth 20 ml Label 15-18% typical — small extra ethanol

An IBA Manhattan at 40% rye is a little over one drink before vermouth. Four of them are past four drinks. NIAAA binge pattern is a health line, not a target. Hours to buy bitters follow the same ABC clock as the whiskey in that state. No invented MSRP. Pour math: whiskey drinks.
