Updated May 2026.
There is no IBA Gin & Tonic recipe. A common bar pour is about 50 ml gin plus tonic. That 50 ml of 40% gin is 1.13 NIAAA standard drinks; 50 ml of US Tanqueray (47.3%) is 1.33. Tonic calories depend on the brand (Schweppes US 12 oz is 130 kcal). “Best gin” is a juniper-legal bottle you still taste after quinine — not a 2023 ranking.
London Dry (Tanqueray, Beefeater, Bombay) is the working style. Hendrick’s is cucumber/rose and often 44% in the US. Related: gin vs vodka, tonic calories.
What the highball actually needs
| Job | Typical bottles | Why |
|---|---|---|
| US 40% London Dry | Beefeater (US now 40%) | TTB gin floor; leftover 44% bottles exist |
| Higher-proof US | Tanqueray 47.3%, Bombay Sapphire 47% | More ethanol per ounce; brand US tiles |
| Softer / different botanicals | Hendrick’s (US often 44%) | Not a legal typeic juniper-forward G&T |
| Skip for this drink | Sloe gin, 20–30% RTD “gin cocktails” | Different class |
Four 50 ml 40% G&Ts are about 4.5 drinks from the gin alone. Diet tonic does not change the ethanol. NIAAA binge pattern is a health line, not a target. No 2026 MSRP. Negroni is a different IBA spec (30/30/30).
