Best Rye Whiskey Under $50

Updated April 2026.

Plenty of real rye still sells under $50 when the bottle is in stock. Rye whiskey is ≥51% rye grain under TTB (27 CFR 5.143), bottled ≥40% ABV. This is not a 2026 price list and not a tasting we ran this year. If the sticker is $51, it is not under $50 that day. Sazerac Rye and some allocated bottles have cheap suggested retail and expensive street tags — treat them like Buffalo Trace on the bourbon page.

Canadian “rye” on an older label may not be 51% rye. US straight rye has tighter rules (no added coloring/flavoring). Compare value bourbon: bourbon under $50 and whiskey under $50.

Bottles that usually clear $50

Lane Typical bottles Why they land under $50

100 proof / bonded Rittenhouse Bottled-in-Bond, Old Grand-Dad is bourbon — for rye, Rittenhouse is the classic bonded shelf 100 proof + bonded rules. Usually well under $50.

A 1.5-ounce 80-proof rye is one NIAAA standard drink; 100 proof is 1.25. Rye spice is mash bill, not extra ethanol. “Smooth” rye is usually lower proof or more barrel sweetnesssmoothest whiskey. Calories follow ethanol: spirit calories.
