Updated March 2026.
“Beginner sipping whiskey” is not a legal class. Straight whiskey is ≥2 years and ≥80 proof. A 1.5-ounce 40% pour is one NIAAA drink; 45% is 1.13. Jim Beam White is 80. Maker’s Mark is 90. Jameson is 40% on the nutrition page used in prior rewrites. Higher proof is not “advanced” in the TTB sense. This is not a 15-bottle ranking.

Start with the neck, not a poll
| Example | Typical US proof | 1.5 oz drinks |
|---|---|---|
| 80-proof bourbon / TN whiskey | 80 / 40% | 1.00 |
| Maker’s Mark | 90 / 45% | 1.13 |
| Jameson | 80 / 40% | 1.00 |
| Barrel proof | Batch | Do the math |
A 750 mL 40% bottle is about 17 drinks. Four 80-proof pours are four drinks. Ice does not change class. NIAAA binge pattern is a health line, not a target. Pour math: whiskey drinks.
