Yes. Ethanol is excreted on the breath. “Vodka is odorless so nobody — including a cop — can tell” is folklore. Typical US unflavored vodka is 40% ABV / 80 proof (27 CFR 5.142 floor). NIAAA: most ethanol is metabolized in the liver (ADH → acetaldehyde → acetate); some ethanol still reaches the airways from the blood. This is not a how-to-beat a test and not a BAC clock.

What the body actually does
NIAAA Core Resource: alcohol passes from the stomach and intestines into the blood and distributes through body water. Food slows absorption; absorption still outruns metabolism, so BAC climbs when the next drink arrives before the last one is cleared. Metabolism starts within seconds and then proceeds at a steady rate for a given person. Caffeine does not “sober you up.” That rate is not a universal “one shot per hour” law, and this page will not print a personal BAC table.
NIAAA alcohol-metabolism summary: ADH turns ethanol into acetaldehyde (toxic, carcinogenic); ALDH turns acetaldehyde into acetate; acetate becomes carbon dioxide and water. CDC (Alcohol Use and Your Health, 14 Jan 2025): the liver can process only small amounts; the rest moves through the body. NIAAA’s alcohol-and-the-lung review is blunt about why a breath test can exist at all: alcohol vapor in the airways comes from diffusion out of the airway blood supply, not from inhaling the drink.

A 1.5 oz shot of 40% vodka is one US standard drink whether someone calls it odorless or not. A 50 mL mini at 40% is about 1.13. A 2 oz pint-glass vodka soda is 1.33. Flavored vodka bottled at the 30% flavored-spirits floor is 0.75 drinks per 1.5 oz — still ethanol on the breath. Count grams, not color.
Clear is not invisible
US vodka identity (27 CFR 5.142) is bottled ≥40% ABV. The old “without distinctive character, aroma, taste, or color” lecture was a class description, not a claim that exhaled ethanol vanishes. A 1.5 oz shot of 40% vodka matches a 12 oz 5% beer and a 5 oz 12% wine in alcohol (NIAAA standard-drink table). The 2022 URL said one shot was “not noticeable,” that cops cannot smell vodka “in moderation,” that the body processes “an ounce an hour,” and that a test can still “identify” vodka for 12–24 hours. Those are challenge clocks and a how-to-hide-it list (gum, peanut butter, mouthwash). Cut. We will not replace them with a different hour-count. How long breath smells of alcohol depends on dose, food, body water, and time. Feeling fine is not a roadside test. Legal driving is 0.08% BAC in most US states (0.05% in Utah). Impairment starts earlier.
What this page is not
It is not a field-sobriety guide. It is not a mouthwash recipe. It is not a health-claim crown that vodka is “safer because it is clear.” CDC: drinking less is better; binge pattern is 4 drinks (women) / 5 (men) on an occasion.
