Updated April 2026.
Modelo Especial is 4.4% ABV and 143 calories per 12 ounces (355 mL) on the 2026 US brand panel0.88 US standard drinks, not a full 5% “regular beer.” Modelo Negra is 5.4% / 172 calories. Oro is 4.0% / 90 calories. Cheladas and Suprema are other SKUs. Read the can. Do not mix them.
The 2023 page listed Especial at 4%. That is wrong for current US bottles. This is label math, not a drinking contest.
Modelo lineup (US brand pages, this pass)
Standard drinks = (fl oz × ABV) ÷ 0.6. NIAAA’s example beer is 12 oz at 5% = 1.00 drink. 12 × 0.044 ÷ 0.6 = 0.88.

Official Especial also lists 13.6 g carbs / 1.1 g protein / 0 g fat per 12 oz. Negra: 15.7 g carbs / 1.5 g protein. Oro: 3 g carbs / 0.7 g protein. A 24-ounce Especial is 1.76 drinks. Official size pickers also show 7 oz and 32 oz packs — those are not “one beer” either (7 oz at 4.4% ≈ 0.51 drinks). For another light lager that is not 5%, see Busch Light. For beer-count math, how many beers to get drunk. Corona Extra sits at 4.6%: how many Coronas.
Especial is not Negra is not a Chelada
Especial is the pale pilsner-style lager. Negra is a Munich dunkel-style dark lager from 1925, still 5.4% on the fetched 2026 US panel. Oro is the light SKU. Cheladas are beer plus tomato, lime, salt, chile, or fruit. Suprema is a stronger flavored line. Non-alcoholic Chelada NA is the under-0.5% product. Official Chelada HTML 404’d this pass — read that can; do not borrow Especial’s 4.4%.
Imported by Crown Imports, Chicago. Grupo Modelo / AB InBev. Competitors who print 145 calories or 4.5% ABV are not on the official tile. We use 143 / 4.4%. Mexico-domestic bottles can differ. Always the can in your hand.
Why “Modelo is 4%” stuck
Some older US materials and some export markets listed Especial near 4.0–4.5%. The live US brand page this pass is 4.4%. Four 12-ounce 5% beers in about two hours is NIAAA’s binge pattern for women; five for men. In Especial terms that is about 4.5 cans (women) or 5.7 cans (men) of 12-ounce 4.4% — still a warning, not a target. A lime in the neck does not change either number.
A pitcher of Especial is a volume question. If the house pitcher is 60 ounces of 4.4%, that is 4.4 standard drinks — see how much is in a pitcher of beer. Split it out loud. For gas-station 24-ounce cans, see best gas station alcohol.
