What Is Good to Mix With Whiskey?

Updated August 2026.

Ginger ale, soda water, cola, and lemon are the honest whiskey mixers. They are grocery products with labels. An Old Fashioned (whiskey, sugar, bitters) and a Sour (whiskey, lemon, sugar) are standard templates, not brand-secret recipes. Soda water is the only common mixer that leaves the 97-kcal, 0 g-sugar shot almost unchanged.

A 1.5-ounce pour of 80-proof is still one US standard drink after you add bubbles (NIAAA, December 2025). The mixer changes flavor and calories. It does not delete ethanol.

Mixers that earn a place

Mixer What it does Watch-out
Soda water / club soda Highball, 0 kcal Still one drink per 1.5 oz of 40%
Ginger ale Classic; sweet spice Sugar is from the soda
Ginger beer Hotter ginger; good with rye Often more sugar; some have a little alcohol — read the can
Cola Hides a lot of whiskey ~90–100 kcal / 8 oz plus the shot
Lemon + sugar (sour) Acid and sweet Fresh lemon; count the syrup
Bitters + sugar (Old Fashioned) The cocktail, not a chaser A dash of bitters is not a drink; the whiskey is
Coffee (hot or cold) Common with Irish whiskey Caffeine does not sober you up
Apple cider Fall highball Sugar from the cider

Jim Beam’s own site pushes a Beam & ginger highball. That is on-brand and accurate: White Label was built to mix. Peated malt in cola is your money. For a longer soda list on the vodka side, what sodas mix with vodka — the cola math is the same.

Ratios without fake precision

A highball is often about 1.5–2 oz whiskey to 4–6 oz mixer over ice. Bars free-pour. Home jiggers do not have to. An IBA Whiskey Sour is 4.5 cl whiskey, 1.5 cl lemon, 1.5 cl syrup — 45/15/15 mL — if you want a written spec. We are not inventing a “best ratio” for every brand.

Do not mix whiskey with another person’s medication, with energy drinks as a “focus hack,” or with the idea that ginger ale is a chaser that blocks a DUI. For flavor without a mixer, water and ice. For identity, Beam is bourbon.
